When we think of space, one thing usually comes to mind: silence. A vacuum where a whisper, a shout, or even a star exploding cannot be heard.
And this is scientifically true, at least based on how humans perceive sound. On our planet, sound occurs in air or water as molecular vibrations. But in outer space, where matter is so sparse, there are not enough particles to carry these vibrations. That is the reason why astronauts in space cannot hear each other without their radio helmet headsets.
But an interesting point is that, just as normal sound is not audible in the void of space, the universe itself is not silent. Though it does not propagate sound waves as Earth does, various forms of energy, such as electromagnetic waves and plasma oscillations, flow through it continuously. Silence does not mean the total absence of movement; it means the absence of sound vibrations that humans have the capability to hear.
What Voyager heard
For instance, let us consider NASA's Voyager spacecraft. While they travelled through the outer parts of the solar system, their plasma wave detectors picked up the oscillations produced by charged particles in space. The result, when researchers tuned those frequencies to the audible range, was marvellous. They resembled a low, rumbling chorus of hums, shrieking whistles, and echoes — like something taken from science fiction.
Each planet has its own voice. Jupiter has a huge magnetic field that generates powerful radio waves; translated into sound, it crackles like static mixed with roaring storms. Saturn's rings carry plasma waves that, when processed, sound like whispers. These are not just background noise — scientists use them to study the environments, magnetic fields and weather of those worlds.
The question is not whether space has sound, but whether we have learned to listen.
We can say one thing: space is not completely silent. It is full of patterns, signals, and waves that communicate with us in a language we have only just started to understand. Although our hearing is limited, human-made instruments are designed to pick up such signals. They are a reminder that the universe is always resonating and always transmitting — the only difference is that we cannot hear it directly.
To us, the universe might seem silent. But to what we can detect, it is filled with infinite music.
